John Owen
Owen's work on Hebrews spread over seven huge volume's, the longest work of its kind, on that book of Scripture. When Owen had completed the seventh volume, he said thus:
"I must now say that after all my searching and reading, prayer and assiduous meditation have been my only resort and by far the most useful means of light and assistance, by these my thoughts have been saved from many an entanglement."
And that shaped Owen's entire life, in a pursuit after personal holiness, a level of which he attained was second to none. All his achievements, and accomplishments and learning, would have all been void and he would not have been the force to be reckoned with that he became, if not for his personal holiness, that made him somewhat unique even in those days. And in our day and age, even more so.
